Heading north from Port Douglas, it's only 16 kilometres till you reach Mossman, a sugar growing town and the regional centre for the sugar industry. Nearby Wonga Beach and Newell Beach have become popular holiday destinations with a choice of accommodation including a selection of lovely holiday homes, but without the crowds of Port Douglas.

Mossman is located 75 kilometres north of Cairns, 16 kilometres north of Port Douglas. Although a bit overlooked by mass tourism, Mossman is a pleasant little country town that still retains a distinctly rural feeling, with the difference of being set amid the splendour of lush rainforest mountains and green canefields.

The town has been a rural centre for the sugar industry for many years. From June to November, visitors driving through the area will see all the cane harvesters at work. Watch out for the sugar trains making their way to the sugar mill. And if you want to have a closer view, there are guided tours to the Mossman Sugar Mill, one of the most technologically advanced mills in the country.

It was George Dalrymple who named the town in 1873 after the mineral explorer Hugh Mosman. It was later changed to Mossman to avoid any confusion with the suburb in Sydney.

Remember that services are limited in this part of the country. Once you leave Mossman, you won't find banks, news agencies, major supermarkets or hardware stores until you reach Cooktown. So stock up in Mossman. But wait! There's still a few points of interest along the way...

Only a few kilometres north of Mossman is Newell Beach. Over recent years, this area has become a popular holiday destination. Visitors will find a range of holiday homes, ranging from affordable to very luxurious. Newell Beach has an impressive sandy beach and a golf course. Further north is the larger community of Wonga Beach, equally beautiful but less visited by tourists. Some days, it is still possible to have Wonga Beach almost entirely to yourself, but you will still find a choice of accommodation.

NATURAL SITES

Mossman Groge is a beautiful section of the Daintree National Park, in Tropical North Queensland.

MOSSMAN GORGE
Five minutes west of town is Mossman Gorge, one of the most visited spots this side of Cairns. It is a beautiful section of the World Heritage Daintree National Park. Here the Mossman River, with its crystal clear water cascades, tumbles its way over and around large granite boulders to create cool clear freshwater swimming holes. Lush steep mountainsides surround the riverbanks.

There are picnic points along the two walking tracks. The River Circuit track, only 400 metres, will take you to fantastic lookouts over the Mossman River. From the car park, the circuit runs alongside the river and returns to the carpark through the rainforest. The Rainforest circuit track runs for 2.7 kilometres and will take you around an hour. From the river circuit track, continue on to the Mossman River lookout and from there you will access the Rainforest Circuit track via a suspension bridge over Rex Creek, where you will have beautiful views of Manjal Dimbi and an access point to Wurumbu Creek.

The Gorge is home to the Kuku Yalanji people, the traditional Aboriginal landowners who inhabit the area and is the ancient site of many local Aboriginal legends. The Kuku Yalanji provide guided tours. For more information, see www.yalanji.com.au or contact (07) 4098 2595.

NEWELL BEACH
This 2.5 kilometres long beautiful beach lies only a few kilometres north of thriving Mossman. Newell is located on the shores of the Coral Sea, with magnificent views of the sea and the majestic Great Dividing Range. The beach is a dream; white sand, crystal blue waters and swaying palms are what you always wanted your tropical holidays to be. Newell is also a spectacular spot to see the sunrise

Fishermen will love the beach. There are boatramps to the north of the beach, at Saltwater Creek and on the southern end of Mossman River.

Newell Beach offers a selection of accommodation, but basically is quiet and restful, without noisy hotels. Perfect is you want to escape the hustle and bustle of other less peaceful destinations.

Again, watch out for crocs, they think Newell Beach and the whole area is fantastic as much as we do.

WONGA BEACH
Wonga Beach, located 20 minutes north of Mossman, is an spectacular sandy white beach, the only one in Trinity Bay where you can walk along without seeing any signs or tracks. In fact, it makes for a fantastic beach walk, problably the best beach walk in the area. The views are spectacular, with mountains to the north, Snapper Island to the east and rainforest lines the foreshore. But be aware that it is not unknown to find crocodiles in these waters, especially near the Daintree River mouth. It is not a recommended swimming area!

Birdwatchers will find this area very interesting, with Double-eyed Fig-Parrots and Gould's Bronze-Cuckoos inhabiting the southern end of the beach and Ospreys nesting on the telecom tower on the highway. Bush-stone Curlews and Orange-footed Scrubfowls can be heard in the night along the coast.

Wonga Beach is the place to embark on a BEACH HORSE RIDE. An experience you will find difficult to forget.
