BEACHES SOUTH OF CAIRNS
If you want to escape the crowds but still enjoy absolutely beautiful beaches, then you have to head down. Bramston Beach and Russell Heads offer white sandy beaches and a tropical atmosphere but in a much more relax way. And you can still visit all the different places and attractions that Tropical North Queensland offer but without the hustle and bustle of other destinations.

BRAMSTON BEACH
We've included Bramston Beach on this page, even though it is some distance from Cairns (about 80km) because it is the first accessible beach south of the city, and we believe it offers something different. Bramston Beach is a quiet beachside haven just ten minutes from the Bruce Highway through canefields, banana plantations and rainforest. It seems to have been all but forgotten in the rush to develop the beautiful coastline flanking the Great Barrier Reef. Bramston provides the ideal location for family getaways, and is also popular with older travellers wanting to avoid the hustle and bustle of Cairns.
Bramston Beach community is somewhat of a 'retirement village' with a much older population, who are predominantly Anglo-Australian 'empty nesters'. It's a fairly self sufficient community, with a focus on beachside lifestyle. There is a picnic area and a caravan park and campground. Bramston has little in the way of community infrastructure, including no public transport service in the area, but the unspoilt beach stretches for kilometres and you can swim all year round because of the stinger net. There is also a lifeguard on duty during holiday periods. The area around Bramston is a nature lovers paradise, the ideal haven for fishing, boating, swimming and relaxing. Local wildlife includes Cassowaries, wallabies and many tropical birds. Bramston Beach is the perfect seaside destination to base yourself for visiting Mount Bartle Frere, Queensland's highest mountain, the Babinda Boulders, Paronella Park, Josephine Falls and Eunbenangee Swamp National Park.
