CAIRNS NORTHERN BEACHES
The string of beachside communities that stretch north along the coastline from Cairns each have their own local flavour. If you want to escape the ferver of Cairns city, but still want to be within reach of the action, one of these beaches is sure to be what you're looking for. But which one?
FOUR MILE BEACH, PORT DOUGLAS
Port Douglas' famous Four Mile Beach is one of the region's most popular - and most photographed - beaches. But despite its polularity, it still maintains a very undeveloped feel, with the beachfront homes and holiday accommodation very well hidden behind the lush vegetation.
CAPE TRIBULATION BEACH
If you love nature, and don't mind that there aren't any ice-cream kiosks along the beach, then Cape Tribulation may be the spot for you. The tropical rainforest drapes right down to the white sand, and on an early morning beach walk, you may not find another human being in sight.
MISSION BEACH
Mission Beach is a thriving but idillyc and relaxed beachfront town with more than fourteen kilometres of pristine golden sandy beaches lined with palm trees. In our opinion, this is one of Tropical North Queensland's best kept secrets, and we wouldn't mind if it was kept that way. So don't tell anyone, okay?
AIRLIE BEACH
Airlie Beach only has a relatively small beach adjacent to the town, but like Cairns city, it has made up for this with the construction of a beautiful swimming lagoon. Airlie Beach is a party town with a genuine beachside atmosphere, and is the gateway to the magnificent Whitsunday Islands.
WHITEHAVEN BEACH
Whitehaven Beach, on rugged Whitsunday Island, is a nine kilometre expanse of pure white silica sand. Contrasted against the bluer-than-blue waters of the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach would be our pick for the title of 'Tropical North Queensland's most beautiful beach'.
